Vintage: Once Upon a Decade

bronzehep

Once upon a decade (the Earth’s crust had cooled, but only just.) I was a 1st year Fashion Merchandising Major with a Theater Minor. Rhinestone broaches and Enid Collins (before the Tandy buy-out), Borsa Bella and Caron of Texas box purses were my kryptonite, still are.
I’m by NO means an expert on all things Vintage. I am however familiar with the terrain, have a working knowledge of the language and most importantly – know what I like. I’m not at all embarrassed to ask questions and seek out answers. Having said that let me ask and answer the question I hear most often.

Elizabeth Taylor Vintage

How old does a piece have to be to be called Vintage?

Fashion is cyclical; everything old will be new again. The standard according to many critics’ states: Vintage is over 50 years old and Antique over 100. I beg to differ and I’m not alone. “Most clothing items that are over 25 years of age are no longer easily attainable; if it’s not easily attainable it is Vintage.” If your interest lies in obtaining and collecting vintage haute couture and we use the attainability yardstick then a piece from a collection 2 seasons ago would be considered Vintage.

Incorporating Vintage into your wardrobe is really about originality, attitude, style, point of view, flair and non-conformity. Added bonus, you’re recycling. Look at you, all environmentally conscious AND fierce!

If this is your 1st foray into the world of vintage dressing start small, get your feet wet before jackknifing into that pool. A pair of vintage inspired earrings or accessory from PrincessDominiqueVintage.com could be just the ticket. There’s a mink headband currently on the site keeping me up at night.

I’m thinking pencil skirt, cashmere twin set, sling-backs, a couple of charm-bracelets and THAT mink head band and it’s “ Miss Jones will you come in and take a letter !! “ The screen credits roll, the camera zooms in and 1950’s Hollywood Happy Ever After is implied. ~sigh~
(Yes a minor in Theater.)
