Stylista of the Week – Davida Chanel

Tech tipsComputer Tricks

BIO:

Who am I? I am…a daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece who is extremely loyal to my family but intent on charting my own course. I’m a writer, indie filmmaker, entertainment juggernaut whose favorite pastime is blogging – I feel like that is where I shine. On my blog, I get to be totally me – who can stop me, that’s my world. I’m a lover…of food, men, books, films, art and shoes. I love hard and am infatuated by the idea of being in love so I allow myself to fall in love as often as possible-right now I’m head over heels in love with thigh high boots! I’m a hard-working hustler chick fueled by great, innovative ideas that come from within. I am a super hero with the power of reflection-what you see in me is what you really possess yourself: don’t try to change me-what you are resisting is you. Above all else, I understand that there are no definitions that can hold me, but if you must pick one, know that I am a manifestor; I am that which I say I am.

ON HER FASHION PROWESS:

I like fashion, but I’m a true fan of style. I appreciate when style is approached from an individual standpoint. One’s style should reflect one’s point of view and I respect individual style that tells a story. My style is DRAMA-when I get dressed I have a role in mind and I dress to fit it. Am I going to let my rock star loose or am I going for more of a demure damsel in distress? Whatever my mood-it is reflected in the way I dress (sometimes my mood is damn I hate this job!). My style icons are Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Victoria Beckham. I’d say I am classic meets extreme. I love classic pieces paired with the most eccentric things you can find. I’m most likely to be seen wearing a Tiffany charm bracelet and less conspicuously, great lingerie because the foundation is the most important part of a look. I’m not sure how I would define my style but most would probably say eclectic. I try not to define it, I just let it be.

WHAT SHE’S WEARING:

In the attached picture I’m wearing a plain Hanes wife beater and a huge can-can toulle skirt made by a local designer in the French Quarter. I have on some Aldo ankle boots because I think they make my legs look nice. Overall, you see my personality in this picture, which is what my fashion style is all about – letting my personality shine!

FASHION TIP:

Figure out your body type and once you do, work with it instead of against it. Just because clothes come in your size doesn’t mean they fit you!

FAVORITE DESIGNER:

Tom Ford.

Spring 2010 Burberry London Show

Burberry Spring 2010 Collection Show in London

I’ve never been a fan of Burberry, maybe because all I’ve ever known was that overused pattern that lined every raincoat, hat and patterned every scarf. I love these pieces, but my favorite are the shoes with the funky socks. They just rock in a sultry way. Not everyone can pull it off. It just works with these pieces. From the New York Times, here is what Suzy Menkes had to say about the Burberry Spring 2010 Collection Show in London:

LONDON — The confetti that rained down on the glamazon models and the famous front-row guests may have been silver. But Burberry Prorsum set a gold standard for London Fashion Week.

The show was sophisticated, modern and about as far as you can step on giant platform shoes from Burberry’s muddy, military origins. The designer Christopher Bailey’s statement was both a gorgeous celebration of high fashion and a squelching riposte to the small fry who had shown during the London season.

The Burberry show was slick, streamlined and everything about it smelled of might and money — from the giant show tent to the front-row guests, who included Victoria Beckham, posing for the cameras in her own full-skirted design, Gwyneth Paltrow, in one of Mr. Bailey’s ruched miniskirts, and the face-of-Burberry Emma Watson, who was wearing a high-wattage gold dress that was an eon away from her Hogwarts school uniform in the Harry Potter films.

Burberry smartly focused on its icon — the trench coat — for this return to London from Milan, the first time in Mr. Bailey’s design leadership of the house. But instead of nostalgia for a horsey, country world, the coats were made for frisky fillies. Draped, like the dresses, to an inch of their lives, with ultra-short hemlines and with military epaulettes transformed as twists to a broad 1980s shoulder, these coats were not made for wartime trenches nor muddy country walks.

Ironically, after a soggy, rain-soaked British summer 2009, Mr. Bailey offered only sunny weather clothes, created in the trench coat’s traditional neutral color or in macaroon pastels, from sugar pink and primrose yellow to ice blue. The brand may have deep British roots, but the clothes were aimed at the young, fast-paced international set.

What was missing from the show was Mr. Bailey’s understanding of London’s quirky originality or a whiff of Scottish heather or country hedgerows and rose-buds. But as proof that a brand can move from local to global, the Burberry show was top of the class.

An unexpected trend coming out of the London season was an African vibe. After Paul Smith’s colorful references to the Congo, a diversity beat played through this multicultural city.

Nathan Jenden has made his home in New York, so perhaps it was in celebration of an African-American president, as much as the streets of London, that inspired him to use all African and Asian models and to refocus on the feisty, bright colors of his last season.

A giant print like a Bollywood poster was splashed on a bold T-shirt, while the models, their hair in African braids, came out in one brightly patterned outfit after another. Like so much of the London season, these were feel-fun clothes to fight recession gloom. And Mr. Jenden also worked more graphically in black and white — not least with the “Pearly Queen” jacket that opened the show.

Sienna Miller and her sister Savannah are nearer to Hollywood than India’s movie hub. And their Twenty8Twelve collection looked like summer in Los Angeles — all tiny denim jackets, brief shorts and mini sundresses.

But here, too, was a hint of Africa in splashes of tie-dye print and in the bandanna-wrapped hair that had all the messed-up glamour of Sienna’s movie-star look.

Although London did not come up with any major trends, a focus on prints, sharp shoulders and short hemlines suggested an optimism that countered the city’s gloomy financial news.

Lalique Bacchantes Vase

Tech tipsComputer Tricks

Lalique Bacchantes Vase

This Bacchantes vase from Lalique is something I’ve had my eye on for 7 years now. I’m a planner by nature and we are getting ready to secure the plans for our home that we’re building and we’re budgeting to furnish only 4 rooms to begin with: the master bedroom, the office, the great room and the prayer room (which will consist mostly of colorful pillows). This vase will definitely grace the glass coffee table in the great room, however it won’t house flowers, maybe just a big mound of our favorite old school candies or jelly beans.
