Fashionistas Have Twitter Peeves

I’m not a fashionista with a gun, I’m worse than that, I’m a fashionista with Twitter peeves! Some people add Twitter to their repertoire as just something else to do. They just dive in without taking a minute to learn how to use it or even fully understanding it. Even fashionable people take issue with others on Twitter because etiquette is not just limited to what shoes match what purse, honey. Here are some rules that I think should exist:
1. Please realize that #FF or FollowFriday is not MANDATORY. You don’t go to the dog house because you don’t bunch up all 5,000 of your followers every single Friday and Tweet their names. You’d never get anything else done! That’s understandable. However, if someone recommends you, thank them–how hard is that?
2. If someone ReTweets or RT’s a message that you’ve Tweeted, thank them. You are never too Twitter popular or too Famous to say THANK YOU. If you think you are, check your followers after you’re finished reading this and watch how your numbers have decreased.
3. Realize that people who follow you, trust you to some degree, please make sure that when you are passing on links, that you’ve already clicked on the link and that it is appropriate to the audience that you are sending it out to. There is nothing worse than sending out broken links or worse yet, SPAM or images that are NSFW (not safe for work) that aren’t flagged as such.
4. Many people who use Twitter are notorious for DMing you a welcome message and ask “How did you find me?” but you can’t DM them back because they’re NOT FOLLOWING YOU. CUT IT OUT! That’s Twitter 101 you buffoon. It frustrates people and gets you unfollowed, not to mention it makes no sense and decreases your credibility–with me at least.
5. Tell your followers when you’re leaving. Don’t look at it as checking in. You have to realize that you do have people who are following your Tweets and are engaging you. When you disappear mid-sentence it come across as rude. I normally end my away messages with “Gotta Flutter” so that people aren’t rambling on thinking that I’m ignoring them.
6. Realize that networking is not only about YOUR STUFF. Check out other people’s websites, links and products, otherwise what’s the point of being on Twitter? Just set up a website, get some business cards and skip the fake networking premise altogether if that be the case.
7. When people look at your profile and Tweet history they want to see that you engage others not just rows and rows of Tweets where you promote your own website and spew random thoughts on what you think, feel or are doing, but aren’t actually talking to or @ anybody. If that’s the case, log off and keep a journal and leave Twitter to those who want to network and engage–like me.
8. I’ve seen so many people RT people’s Good Morning messages to several of their followers or their #Follow Friday list, I can’t for the life of me understand WHY PEOPLE DO THIS WHEN THEY AREN’T FOLLOWING ANY OF THE PEOPLE THAT ARE INCLUDED IN THE RT! Aggravating and just doesn’t make sense, especially when I check my @ messages and their names comes up and click on their link thinking they are someone who I’m forgetting to engage only to find out they aren’t even following me. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP IT!
9. Posting your link in every other tweet is annoying. If people are that interested in you they will click your profile. Overusing your link is promotion suicide, it almost guarantees that people will begin to view you as a spammer rather than someone who engages and unfollow you or worse yet start ignoring you altogether.
10. I don’t believe that everybody who I follow MUST follow me, but there are some people who get an inane amount of pride or control over seeing that 3,000 people are following them and that they are only following 12 people. These people don’t even take the time to check out someone else’s profile to see if they are someone who they may like to follow or engage with. To them I say: GET OVER YOURSELF YOU’RE NOT REALLY THAT CELEBRITY SPECIAL!
11. The lamest trick on Twitter is follow me until I follow you and then unfollow me. Trust. You will get unfollowed too you follower hound. You don’t get or keep followers that way, you get taken as a joke and the last laugh is ALWAYS on you.
12. Oh, and let’s not forget the people who never take a minute to review their new followers to see if there is someone they can connect with or network with. They just sit back while everybody follows them, and they simply follow nobody. Boo. People like that should get punted off Twitter.
If you’d like to add to this list, please do in the comments section. We need to get this circulating so that people who are using Twitter learn to use it better. You can follow me @MissPrincessDom

VIP Mailing List Coming Soon!

I haven’t joined twitter because the whole following thing scares me.. it consumes people’s life.. but on any social networking site; thank you is never out of reach many people don’t understand that..
True. I limit my time though. I have two accounts one for the books I write and one for fashion. You can control who follows you too and who you follow. But people in real life need rules too ie. cover your mouth when you cough. Some people don’t learn enough about something BEFORE they start using it.
Yes, Lady Dom! Thank you for the tips on Twitter. I’m an infrequent user, so it’s good to get guidance on how NOT to use it!
I love these tips, I always check out the follower before I follow because some of them are crazy rediculous and I seriously have no idea how they found me! I did accidentally get spammed and was apparently sending out some “nasty” messages and felt horrible that I had to DM all of my followers and apologize. The next day someone I follow got spammed and sent out some “nice” messages- what why did mine have to be nasty? Well I had to start weeding through and finding those nasty spammers;{ I love to chat with people and it angers me when I tweet them and they act like I am not there, ok then un-follow me jerk! Oh well I guess I just need to smack this in thier DM eh? teehee
I want to thank you to, because some of this I didn’t know and now won’t feel like an idiot by doing some of them;} So Thank You!
You done preached, DOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
