Rochelle, tell us a little about what inspired your magazine.

Ever since I can remember I’ve always wanted to work for a fashion magazine, I even considered working for Vibe or Source Magazine. One day I was talking with a friend of mine, who happens to be the co-founder (Joel Maldonado). I was telling him my goals and I mentioned to him that I wanted to work for a fashion magazine, and he asked me “why don’t we just start our own magazine?” He suggested we do an urban Christian magazine, and I was thinking more on the lines of fashion. So we combined both of the ideas together and that’s how Exodus was born.

What is your magazine’s niche and target market?

We target urban youth and young adults ages 15-25, believers and non-believers.

What is the hardest/most fun part of running a magazine?

The hardest part of running a magazine is making sure that we have all the material in by the set deadlines. Sometimes people can be real flaky. Working in this field is very fast-pace and a lot of the time I have to multi-task and if someone is slacking on their part, that’s another thing to add to my plate. So sometimes it can really be stressful and frustrating. But with each issue it gets easier. The fun part of running a magazine is meeting and interviewing different people. Just getting to know a person, and finding out what it took for them to get to where they are is very encouraging, not only to me but to our readers as well. There were many times I was like, “Lord this is too hard” but just hearing different testimonies and the positive responses I’ve gotten from the readers, it really encourages me to press forward. Working in this industry can be a battle, but it’s an uphill battle that comes with great rewards with each issue.

What/Who is your most prized interview to date?

I would have to say Carmen Michelle and Kre8tor. I am a big fan of theirs and around the time of their interviews I was going through a rough spot in my personal life, and some of the things they said really ministered to me. I enjoyed all of the interviews I’ve done but those two are at the top of my list.

If your magazine had a theme song what would it be?

Dope by TrePeace (Holy Hip-Hop artist out of ATL). Dope meaning Hot (not drugs). Because Exodus Magazine is the hottest Christian magazine out right now! *lol*

What are the goals for your publication in the next 3-5 years?

Within the next 3-5 years I believe Exodus Magazine will be an on-demand, worldwide online/print publication. We also plan to have an online televised show featuring live interviews and performances from Christian artists.

Who are the Top 3 “must have” interviews on your wish list?

Mary J. Blige, Tyler Perry, R-Swift

Have there been any new changes in the structure of your magazine recently?

Yes, in order to reach the world we wanted to be able to make Exodus Magazine accessible to everyone. Since this day in age most youth and young adults are in to the Internet, we’ve decided to make Exodus Magazine a free online publication instead of a paid print publication. We will still have special print editions but the majority of our issues will be online in order to reach the masses. The change will take place after our 4th issue. We will take a brief hiatus and re-launch.

Where can people go to learn more about and to subscribe to your magazine?

They can log onto our website www.exodusmag.com or they can go on our myspace page www.myspace.com/exodusmag

Thank you for taking the time to interview with us Rochelle. I simply LOVE your magazine!

Hi V, you must be using Internet Explorer. They are the only ones who do that. It should view fine in another browser. Let me know.

Good luck on the magazine, Rochelle.

    Good interview, Dominique.

I was about to beg for a job writing for the mag, until i read where it’s a christian mag.

    They would never hire me.

Her approached age range is a good one.

Sidebar: I just recently switched to Firefox Mozilla explorer. It’s much more smoother than IE.
