Bourne Ultimatum Smashes Sales Records

The amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne is back, and this time he clobbered Homer Simpson on his way to scoring the biggest film opening ever for the month of August.

“The Bourne Ultimatum,” the third movie in the espionage action series starring Matt Damon as a one-time CIA hit man searching for his past, grossed $70.2 million its first weekend to rank as North America’s top film at the box office, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

That tally, fueling an unusual late-summer rally at the multiplex, far exceeded the debut ticket sales generated by the first two films in the Universal Pictures franchise.

By comparison, “The Bourne Identity” opened at No. 2 with $27.1 million in June 2002, and the “The Bourne Supremacy” landed at No. 1 in July 2004 with $52.5 million. Those two films went on to gross nearly $485 million worldwide combined.

The latest “Bourne” total marks the biggest first weekend ever for a movie in August, surpassing the $67.4 million opening posted by “Rush Hour 2″ the same weekend in 2001.

i want to go see it this week. I think we’ll have to see how Rush Hour 3 does at the box office though. I think that might do even better

Great flick miss Dominique! But, I’m betting that Rush Hour 3 will be even bigger as far as August box record sales go. Even though I have no desire to see RH3 in the movie theatre. I think that Tucker has become a big Diva all of a sudden. But the Bourne Ultimatum will have longer lasting power at the box office. Chalk up another hit for Damon!

Wow it’s interesting that you both think RH3 will do better. I’m not sure. Action-wise Bourne hit it on the head.

    Thank you.

    Know why I’m thanking you?

Because I have been beating my head up against the wall trying to think of the titles of all FOUR of the movies in the Bourne series.

Duh … there were only three.

You know that’s just as funny as me trying to figure out when Spiderman 3 is coming out only to be told it’s been out and probably on the way to dvd.

I saw it over the weekend. It was the bomb! I personally can’t see RH3 doing better. This movie was on point. Bourne Ultimatum got fantastic reviews and lived up to everyone.

I can’t wait to see RH3. Rarely do I go to the movies in the last couple of years. But when Rush Hour comes out I am right there. Never seen the Bourne movies though. I’m sure I will when it comes out of DVD since hubby likes it and I have to watch a least one movie a week with him.

Summer me either. I think Bourne will continue to hold the record.

Creole I can’t wait to hear what you think.

Shelia you will LOVE it if you love non-stop action.

Rose for some reason I’m not too psyched to see RH3, not sure why.

Mary yes I’ve got to get the other 2 on dvd.
