Did She or Didn’t She?

Beyonce

Yeah, yeah, yeah, there’s all this hoopla about Beyonce being whitewashed on the cover of Vanity Fair, fact is who cares? I mean, its not like this is the first time they’ve done it. They do it all the time. All the magazines do and have been doing it for years. *shrug* Soceity is notorious for making everyone light, bright with blonde hair (the only exception was OJ Simpson on the cover of Time, they actually made him darker–you know why). They coax every brunettes starlet in Hollywood to go blonde with the lure of fame, fortune and Ben Affleck. But seriously, just look at Jennifer Lopes in her Loreal commercials or whatever product she’s pimpin’. They didn’t lighten her skin but her hair is straight cornsilk blonde #57, but then we should have seen that coming, right? They snuck in the streaks and highlights and then went straight peroxide on us because–well, it makes her more *ahem* commercial *shakin’ head* Even that chick from America’s Next Top Model who had that weird glue-on, Groucho Marxx eyebrow thing going on got bleached. She got booted off the show two weeks later, but oh, well, it was fun while it lasted I guess. Its an epidemic, we already know that, but in this case I’m probably leaning towards it being more like a publicity stunt than anything else–greed will do that to you–wanting to hog the limelight will do that to you too–as if “Be” isn’t getting enough press as it is. I’m not hating, but I mean, a Destiny’s Child farewell tour, Jay-Z “and” his new club “and” their mini jetsetting vacations, her being photographed everywhere and being invited to every “thing”, singing, dancing, a new string of Wal-Mart commercials with her two sidekicks and one with her entire family–please–can someone say over exposure? Note to self: Call her publicist pronto. Be smart, because if over exposure isn’t good for a roll of film it isn’t good for people either. I say just sit down and be happy that people even know who you are, geez. It just irks me when some people get all the press and others get ZIP. But honestly I know that they’re only implementing the law of supply and demand here, and we all know that even though some of us will deny that its us that are helping to fuel this whole Beyonce frenzy, truth is whatever Beyonce says, does or wears, there are kittens out there just lapping it up by the bowl full.

Note: I get lots of information on jobs, casting and extra gigs, so, to stay abreast on that and fashion and celeb news join my discussion group at princessdominique-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. I get way too many to post them on the blog or to my mailing list. Thanks!

I read all of the articles about he being lightened…but isn’t she lighter skinned anyways. Good Grief…Who cares. Don’t get me wrong, I read every single article about her.
I think I am waiting for her DIVA to pop out on us.
Or for the mental breakdown that is sure to come.
BUT, I can not hate, the girl is doing her thizzle!
    She’s a Hustla Baby!
    Holla!

LOL at ‘with the lure of fame fortune and Ben Affleck’.
I refrain from saying anything about ‘the second coming’ Miss Knowles.

i’ve questioned her judgement ever since she decided she needed to cater to a soldier who had 99 problems but a bitch wasn’t one.

TJ–You’re right about that. She’s a hustla for sure!

Vanity–she does to me too, I don’t know who started the claim she was lightened but it was getting on my nerves.

Hapee–You know Ben breaks them all in

Walee–What can I say? I’m doing the NaNoWri too and I’m nearing 10k.

Jazz–You’re too right about that Jigga who?

I’m a little too early (and also unsubscribed) for the freebie huh? *sigh*

This was a nice post. You had me crackin up when you said “Be smart because if over-exposure isn’t good for a roll of film, it can’t be good for people either.” GREAT LINE!!! LOL

Beyonce, Beyonce…..all the singers are blonde, turning lighter and we buy into it. You should see the folks around town in bright blonde weaves……some with blue, green and light hazel eyes everywhere….I think everyone should be happy with their true self and maybe then we will start to love our true African American/Black selves. Let me know where to send you a book by 14-year old Edward for your contest…

I don’t think there’s anythin wrong with blond hair.

I prefer mine jet black so I dye it that color.

IMO relaxing or coloring your hair doesn’t necessariy = being unhappy with your ‘true self’

I think we all want to be beautiful. But even as a child we were told through commercials, tv, music, etc., even our dolls that we purchased that light, blonde, green eyes or blue was beauty. So many of our truly beautiful women dye their hair light blonde because that seems to be accepted. Lil Kim, Eve, Ciara, Mary J, etc..I’m pretty sure it is done to be more marketable…..but all I am saying is when you go to the inner cities you are seeing our young teens doing the same.. It’s okay to dye your hair, it’s the marketing of this that is the problem…we can be beautiful with any color hair. Maybe I’m not making myself clear…. .

”I’m SOOOOO not shocked” face.

These magazines have been lightening up everything about us from our skin to our hair for the longest. Really, why must we be light and blonde as a determining factor for blowing up. Don’t get me started because stuff like this really get’s me angry! It’s to a point where some people don’t even recognize it at being “white-washed”, knowing good and well 99% of minorities don’t have blonde hair. Come to think of it, a lot of the white women don’t have blonde hair either. Most of them dye it….but…I digress.

You’re right about the Beyonce overkill, because I for one am tired of hearing about her. This was the first I’ve heard about the whitewashing, because I tend to tune out when people have new gossip about her lol. And who cares anyways?? And how many times has she gotten married to Jay-Z and pregnant? Enuf is enuf already!!

Hey Vanity…are you SUBSCRIBED to the blog? If so let me know.

Rose–don’t get me started on the dolls. At least now they have them in all shades. It wasn’t always like that.

Sunnchine–Youre right, they have been doing it and I guess we’ve become so desensitized to it that we come to almost expect it. Good point about the hair…

LivingSingle–OVERKILL! Don’t people realize that the more you try to keep something quiet the more buzz there is about it…that’s part of her plan anyway.

I never thought Beyonce had much natural beauty and has developed over time.

I think she is a beauty and such a talent. But why whitewash her? This is really upsetting. All shades of color in people are beautiful and should be celebrated…not digitized for the narrow-minded!

“Its funny how everyone on the front covers can be depicted and lighter brighter and move cosmectically appealing” Except when they want to show a face of hunger and strife or something or the sorts, you don’t see any retouching to fotos, when you have Africa on the cover…. or a damn criminal of the darker persausion, oh no, no retouching there, the blacker and meaner the betterl

    Just thoughts

    Hi Dominique,

Hey, I think her name was Corin on ANTM who got booted off and she was my favorite! She was gorgeous with her jet black hair before TYRA told them to lighten it. She actually lasted alot more than 2 weeks, plus I hated that she was booted AND I hated that they lightened her hair.

But I do dislike this Blond trend that’s going on and sadly I think it’s here to stay Princess.

Stop by and participate in the meme!

I guess Beyonce’ is trying to make the money while she can. J. Lo and Toni Braxton used to be the “IT” girls. Now is Beyonce’s turn. The House of Dereon clothes are going to be in the stores soon. She’ll be discussing that on Oprah’s show on tomorrow. The Pink Panther movie where she plays a part comes out in February. She’s about to start work on a new album. And she’s about to start filming the “Dream Girls” movie.

You’re right about her over exposure. She may want to just sit back and relax and enjoy the fruits of her labor instead of working herself into the ground. I wonder whether she’ll settle down with Jay-Z in a year or two.

Seeing I don’t read a lot of the celeb scoop, this post was up my alley. Great venting you did and I concur. When I saw the latest Wally World *ahem* national commercial I turned a little “sage” with envy. Don’t they know I’m just looking to land just one national gig? Anywho, I wasn’t aware of all that they do to those photos, but now that I am, I’ll be sure to resume drawing of the fangs, horns and extension of ears on each cover. To heck if the copy belongs to the library. Serves ‘em right.

we actually talked about this in my communication persuasion class. when does a little airbrushing, editing, etc. cross the line? and should we expect it in “vanity” shots? i don’t know. it’s an interesting debate. i definitely think as far as newspapers goes, we should get the raw deal without too much coverup. but i’m sure people get touched up there as well (like the oj deal).

    interesting post.

Lil Kim looks like Michael Jackson’s twin now. LOL I seen the cover of her new record and I was like *In my Chris Tucker Voice* Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam! Funny thing is there was this white dude on the same isle and he commented how *Good* she looked. You have to kidding me right? I’m fair skinned.. but I don’t dye my hair blonde. Shit, I spent most of my adolesence wanting to be darker so I wouldn’t have to KEEP explaining my racial ethnicity. As far as Beyonce’ goes. She needs to chill out. They are running her into over-drive too soon, too fast. I like her. I think she’s cute.. I don’t partically think she can sing, but then I’m from an era when people actually sang and didn’t run around stages half naked, lip syncing. I think she is a great entertainer and good for making record sales. But enough is enough! *Yawning* I need something new to read. LOL
